Criticism.The British media know perfectly well how to apply this word to European Union current events. We are used to it. Have they ever, anyway, made a good remark about the European entity progressing beyond a single market ? Why was it going to be different concerning the Draft Constitution presented by Giscard d’Estaing last week?
The Times, The Guardian…, they have all objected the contents and the absences of the skeleton for a European Constitution. Though, the most interesting point, in which almost every author agrees, is the insignificant nature of the latter compared to the « freshness, eloquence and profundity of the American constitution ». According to these authors, the success of the American Constituion writing in the 18the century is due to the melting pot of its society, which is completely unknown to European nations. Derisory but expected ! What other reason can the state « bond » to Uncle Sam’s will, argue to criticizes the European progress? On the other hand, to straighten their opposition to any resemblance to the American system, they have refused firmly, to name the European entity « The united States of Europe ». Furthermore, the British media have taken the case of America to criticize the lack of « real crux » in the draft, as the democratic control which is a priority in the American Constitution.
Once again England displays all its traditional refusals and obstacles to a Closer Union, which made part of the « European fathers » first prospects. Shame if they were alive! But, who’s saying that the European Constitution must follow the example of United States ? Isn’t the leader power we want to compete with? For almost 50 years we have being original, and we will keep on being so…
In addition, the proposals to the future of Europe from some members-states, which implies, as always, the defence of national interests, are opening the path to widespread reasoning from the euroskeptic ones. A positive event, I presume, for a country that, according to some authors has always been isolated from Europe, at least from a geographical point of view…
